Why We Don’t Use Skin Scanners, and How We Track Your Progress Instead

Skin scanners are an interesting piece of equipment, and if you’ve visited a beauty salon or skin clinic in the last few years, your therapist may have used one as part of the consultation process. These machines use different lighting conditions to capture images of your skin and reveal hidden damage, and in theory, they can be a great tool to track how your skin is progressing. In reality, that's rarely how they're actually used. More often than not, they're used to shock you into buying a bunch of expensive skincare to "fix" the sun spots, dehydration, pigmentation etc that you've just seen. And honestly, I feel like a lot of the clinics that use these devices have been duped into it by the companies selling them, with the promise they'll sell more retail, make significantly more money, and better earn clients' trust by showing what's really going on beneath the surface. Even in professional beauty groups on social media, I often see new salon owners asking if they're worth it, if they need to invest in one before opening, and feeling like they're somehow less "legit" if they don't have one.

But skin scanners are upwards of $10,000 AUD new, and honestly I don't believe they're ethical in the capacity they're currently being used. Personally, I believe that real skin transformation starts with trust and understanding, not fear. When you come in to see me for a consultation, you already know what's bothering you about your skin, because you see it every day. My job is to help you with that, not show you how "bad" your skin really is or give you new insecurities to worry about in hopes of making a sale to pay off a device. Instead, we start with a detailed consultation, asking the right questions, educating you on what's going on with your skin and what will help, taking hydration readings and progress photos at each session (under normal lighting conditions, and which you don't see unless you request it, because it's an analytical tool not a sales pitch) and create a treatment plan based on your skin's needs and your goals, recommending only the products you actually need, to see the results you actually want.

If you're ready to start your skin journey, I'd love to help. Just book online, or message The Black Rabbit skin clinic on social media to have a chat and see if we're a good fit for you. Located in Newcastle, NSW, Australia. Specialising in acne, rosacea, pigmentation, and inflammatory skin conditions.
